VIRYANET INTRODUCES VOICE PORTAL, AN INTERACTIVE VOICE APPLICATION FOR FIELD SERVICE

Speech-based application allows field engineers to access assignments and report information from any phone, anytime, anywhere

Southborough, Mass. — August 21, 2001 — ViryaNet (NASDAQ: VRYA), a leading provider of enterprise and mid-market wireless workforce management solutions for field service communities, today announced the release of ViryaNet Voice Portal, which is a component of the Company’s Service Hub 5.0 release. ViryaNet Voice Portal allows field engineers to access new calls; obtain detailed information about assignments; and report time-critical information, labor, travel time, and expenses using natural voice commands from any land-line or cellular phone.

“Information is useless unless it can be accessed by the right person at the right time. ViryaNet Voice Portal gives field engineers more flexibility to access time-sensitive information,” said Ron Ben-Natan, CTO, ViryaNet. “Not all of the more than nine million field technicians in the United States can access wireless data, but all have the option of voice browsing. ViryaNet Voice Portal, which uses speech recognition technology, helps to ensure information is accessible to all mobile field engineers, regardless of location or coverage.”

Users of ViryaNet Voice Portal enter a personal code to access their information, such as new calls received. ViryaNet Voice Portal, which requires almost no training, allows field engineers to:
  • Get Detailed Assignment Information. Field engineers can listen to new calls and get detailed information, such as what problems have been reported and when they need to arrive on site.
  • Report Activities. Field engineers can report information about current calls, such as arrival and departure time, miles traveled, and expenses incurred – all by using voice commands.
  • Access Hands-Free Dialing. Once in the Voice Portal system, field technicians can call customers, other technicians, or the call dispatcher, simply by saying, "call” followed by the person’s name, without initiating a new call.
ViryaNet Voice Portal runs on a voice server, which conforms to VoiceXML, an emerging standard language for accessing Internet information through speech-based applications.

ViryaNet’s Service Hub enables service organizations to schedule and dispatch field service technicians, and allows field engineers to wirelessly access relevant information regarding the service they are providing. With Voice Portal, Service Hub can allow communication with a wider variety of applications, platforms and devices.
