UK Department of Health Selects Oracle Human Resources Management System

World's Second-Largest Civilian Employer Expects to Save $572 Million (400m pounds Sterling) Over Ten Years With Oracle E-Business Suite

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Dec. 19 -- ( http://www.oracle.com/tellmemore/?1176485 ) Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL - news), the world's largest enterprise software company, today announced that as part of a $465 million contract awarded to the McKesson consortium by the UK Department of Health, it will provide the UK National Health Service (NHS) with a multi-million dollar implementation of its Web-enabled Human Resources Management System (HRMS) software.

This is expected to be the largest ever implementation of the HR applications of the Oracle E-Business Suite, including HR, Payroll, Self Service, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Training and Administration, HR Intelligence, and Tutor, running on Oracle9i Database. The implementation is scheduled to be piloted early next year and ultimately provide the NHS with a centralized system allowing it to accurately determine for the first time, where staff are based and analyze skills distribution and skills shortages.

Once live, the system will enable the NHS to use employee data effectively making the most of a key asset, human capital. The NHS is one of the biggest employers in the world, and the Oracle software will process details of 1.2 million employees and will have approximately 20,000 concurrent HR and Payroll professionals accessing the system. The estimated $573 million cost savings that will be accrued from the implementation will allow the NHS to ensure that money is invested into the organization's modernization.

Andrew Foster, director of Human Resources for the NHS said, ``The Oracle Human Resource Management System software means that our 29 different payroll and 38 different HR systems can be consolidated into one integrated HR and Payroll system. This helps ensure that the people that need it have access to reliable, up to date information and complete visibility of resources across the whole of the NHS. Not only will the implementation provide us with much needed rationalization of our systems, but the anticipated savings from the implementation can be channeled into other areas of the NHS where it is most needed, such as patient care.''

Oracle, accompanied by the other partners in the McKesson consortium (IBM and PwC Consulting), was chosen in a competitive pitch over Sema, SAP and KPMG offering SAP R/3. The change management process, the implementation and data migration from existing systems, will be carried out by PwC and Oracle Consulting. The applications will be run and managed by McKesson on a single instance of an Oracle Database, in a managed data center. As part of the ongoing ten-year contract with the McKesson consortium, Oracle will provide ongoing support and upgrades to the NHS. The Web-enabled Oracle modules are scheduled to run on an Oracle9i Database, which includes Oracle9i Real Application Clusters and a Data Warehouse, and use Oracle9i Application Server, which provides built-in analytical tools.

Ian Smith, senior vice president and managing director for Oracle UK, Ireland and South Africa explains, ``This deal is vastly important to Oracle and has the potential to deliver huge benefits to all users and employees of the NHS. The NHS is making the smallest number of changes to the applications to help ensure that roll-out times are minimized and benefits derived maximized. It is testament to the reliability and scalability of our HRMS software that the NHS chose an Oracle-based solution. The sheer scale of the implementation is a declaration that the NHS is truly serious about making its organization a market leader in healthcare in the world and it has demonstrated that it is determined to see real return on investment and work to deliver real value to its staff and patients alike.''
