Oracle Delivers Software for Building Dynamic Web Services - .NOWOracle9i Dynamic Services Integrates With Any Application, Runs on Any PlatformREDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Dec. 11-- Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL - news), the largest provider of software for e-business, today announced the general availability of Oracle9i(TM) Dynamic Services, standards-based technology available immediately for developers to create, catalog and manage reliable e-business Web services for use in portal and wireless Internet and intranet applications. Using Oracle9i Dynamic Services, developers can build e-business Web services that access and aggregate information from any Web site, database or syndicated content source, and then personalize that information for each user based on their role and the kind of device they are using. Examples of e-business Web services include currency conversion, travel booking, quote/bid requests, language translation, medical and insurance claim processing, and shipping services.Over two years in development, Oracle9i Dynamic Services provides a programming and management framework for integrating e-business Web services into applications. Key to Oracle Dynamic Services is its use of existing industry standards currently available -- Java and the latest eXtensible Markup Language (XML) specifications from the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C). Oracle Dynamic Services will also leverage emerging protocols, such as Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), as they become finalized. Oracle's support for XML means that developers will be able to build and reuse Web services that interoperate through XML-based Internet protocols. Because Oracle supports cross-platform development, developers can create and deploy these Web services on any of the over 40 operating systems that Oracle runs on, including Microsoft Windows and all major versions of UNIX and Linux. Management, Security and Reliability Not only does Oracle ensure that e-business Web services can be used regardless of the computing environment, Oracle also ensures that e-business Web services can be easily managed, and that they are secure and reliable. E-business Web services created using Oracle9i Dynamic Services can be registered and electronically discovered through Oracle Internet Directory, which catalogs, secures, and provides access to the services. Furthermore, Oracle9i Dynamic Services leverages the scalability, security and reliability of Oracle9i, meeting the requirements of the most demanding high-volume e-business infrastructures. Oracle9i Dynamic Services also lets companies define policies for Web services, such as which services are the most important, which can be aggregated and which should fail-over to alternate services when a service is unavailable. For example, a service that checks an online exchange for the availability of a specific machine-tool part by a certain date could be configured to automatically use a corresponding service of an alternate exchange site if the first exchange doesn't meet the required production schedule. Ideal for ASPs Oracle9i Dynamic Services captures and logs all of the information related to the configuration and execution of services, making it an ideal infrastructure for application service providers (ASPs) and other companies who are planning to offer electronic access to business services over the Internet. Oracle9i Dynamic Services collects statistics such as the frequency and time of day each service is called and by whom, the success/failure rate for service execution, and similar events. All of this information is stored in the industry-leading Oracle database, where it can be analyzed and integrated with billing and other service-related management systems. Portal and Wireless Personalization Made Easy with Oracle9i Application Server Oracle has made it easy for developers to publish the output from any service to portals and wireless applications by integrating the Oracle Dynamic Services functionality with the Oracle9i Application Server. Dynamic Services content and applications can be published as portlets, reusable components that display information and applications in browsers and other devices, allowing them to be delivered to specific users through Oracle9i Application Server's personalization technology. As a result, Oracle's customers can access and personalize their e-business desktops by selecting from a variety of different portlets with just a few clicks of the mouse. ``Oracle is delivering .NOW,'' said Jeremy Burton, senior vice president of Oracle Product and Services Marketing. ``Oracle9i Dynamic Services allows developers to build tomorrow's rich Web applications today.'' Pricing and Availability Oracle9i Dynamic Services, available today, is included free with the current release of Oracle's industry leading database, and leverages the latest technologies within the Oracle9i Application Server, also currently available. The Oracle Dynamic Services Development Kit, the tools that developers use to create Web services, is available for free download from Oracle Technology Network, http://otn.oracle.com , the week of December 18.
