Sprint Selects Oracle(R) Internet Application Server Wireless Edition For Next-Generation Wireless Initiatives

Oracle Enables Personalized Portal Services for New My Wireless Web Service From Sprint PCS

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Oct. 9 -- Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL - news), the largest provider of software for e-business, and Sprint PCS (NYSE: PCS - news), the nation's largest all-digital, all-PCS nationwide wireless network, today announced that Sprint PCS has selected Oracle Internet Application Server (iAS) Wireless Edition to offer new Internet-based wireless services to its consumers and business users. The deal with Sprint PCS is the largest yet for Oracle iAS Wireless Edition, potentially serving eight million Sprint PCS subscribers. On October 3, Sprint PCS launched its first Oracle iAS Wireless Edition-based service, My Wireless Web. The Oracle solution also will enable future business-to-business wireless applications, a major market focus for Sprint PCS.

``We've seen high demand for personalized services in the wired world, and recognize the same need on the wireless Internet,'' said Bryan McCann, vice president of wireless data services for Sprint PCS. ``While most of our competitors have outsourced their personalization solutions, we believe Oracle iAS Wireless Edition gives us a distinct competitive advantage. With a flexible, powerful in-house solution, we can respond faster to consumer and business customization requirements. Using Oracle iAS Wireless Edition, we have already created demo services in just two days.''

Oracle iAS Wireless Edition enables Sprint PCS to make information, in any database or Internet application, available to any wireless device connected to the Internet. By using Oracle iAS Wireless Edition, Sprint PCS is able to create unique, custom services by tying together data from multiple sources. For example, Sprint could provide a service that delivers both the location of a restaurant and driving directions, combining two separate services to create a new, value-added service. Oracle iAS Wireless Edition also gives Sprint PCS the flexibility to deliver content over any network to any wireless device -- personal digital assistants (PDAs), wireless phones, hand-held computers, and even standard telephones. This flexibility comes from Oracle's ability to support a wide variety of mark-up languages such as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Wireless Markup Language (WML) and VoxML, and protocols such as Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

Using these features, Oracle iAS Wireless lets My Wireless Web subscribers prioritize the content and services on their Wireless Web Companion Page (the view they see on their handset or other device) based on personal preferences. The Wireless Web Companion Page is a common interface to Sprint PCS' My Wireless Web and other services such as Internet stock trading or weather reports. Oracle iAS Wireless will be used going forward to provide a common portal interface and personalization services for Sprint PCS' forthcoming business-to-business wireless applications.

Because Oracle iAS Wireless provides the entry point for subscribers using Sprint PCS' wireless services and delivers advanced, transaction-based content, Sprint PCS can provide 24x7 availability with Oracle Lifecycle Support services.

``With its My Wireless Web service, Sprint PCS is at the forefront of the wireless Internet revolution,'' said Jeremy Burton, Oracle senior vice president, Product and Services Marketing. ``Oracle iAS Wireless Edition is the technology enabling Sprint PCS' efforts, delivering the high level of personalization and quality of services that consumers and business users have come to expect. With Oracle iAS Wireless Edition, Sprint PCS can continue advancing its lead in the wireless space with exciting new services that are brought to market quickly.''
