VerticalNet and Net Effect Introduce Live Online Help

"Live Help" Seen as Key Element of Community-Building

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA and HORSHAM, PA - August 31, 1999 - Net Effect, the leading provider of scalable Web-based "Live Help" services, and VerticalNet, Inc. (NASDAQ: VERT), the Internet's leader in business-to-business communities of commerce, announced the upcoming launch of Live Help service on select VerticalNet® community sites. Beginning in early September, visitors will have real-time online access to VerticalNet agents available to help answer questions and facilitate transactions.

By clicking on a "Get Live Help Now" button, visitors will initiate online chat sessions with VerticalNet agents available to assist as advisors or facilitators. Agents can provide custom solutions or utilize one of many pre-prepared solutions as a basis for customization. Complete session transcripts will also be captured and analyzed to identify immediate service improvement opportunities.
