MOTIVE TEAMS WITH INSTALLSHIELD SOFTWARE CORP. TO HELP FURTHER PROMISE OF APPLICATION HEALING WITH EASY TRANSITION TO WINDOWS INSTALLER SERVICE

Austin, Texas, September 24, 2001 - Motive Communications, Inc. (www.motive.com), the leading provider of intelligent service software, today announced that InstallShield Software Corporation, the leader in Windows 2000 software repackaging and deployment solutions, is working with Motive to help move organizations to the Windows Installer service, a critical element to delivering stable applications that are supported by superior service delivery.

The two companies are collaborating to provide customers with a best of breed solution that combines InstallShield's simple migration path to the Windows Installer service with Motive's intelligent service delivery platform to further improve application self-healing and repair. The partnership covers joint market education and endorsement of the Motive-InstallShield solution that complements and extends Microsoft's Windows Installer Service for application packaging and repair.

The future direction of Windows-based application support is built on the Windows Installer service. By combining functionality inherent in Windows Installer with the Motive platform, IT organizations can enjoy an integrated solution to install, auto-repair, patch, upgrade or uninstall applications, manage resource conflicts and ensure that application total cost of ownership is kept as low as possible.

However, with the advent of Windows Installer, most traditional setups (.EXE files) must be repackaged into the new Windows Installer format (.MSI files) to leverage such cost saving features as application self-repair, installation rollback, and install-on-demand. InstallShield's AdminStudio™ solution offers customers built-in application repackaging functionality to easily migrate applications into the new format and immediately begin recognizing the benefits the Windows Installer service delivers.

Historically, application developers have used proprietary technology to create application rollback and support packages. The proprietary files were fragile, hard to support and experienced problems during installations, uninstallations, deployments, upgrades and rollbacks. In addition, proprietary, machine-based rollback packages often directly conflicted with the native functionality provided by the service. Application self-repair, such as that facilitated by the Windows Installer service, has proven to be more effective, accurate and powerful than any proprietary-based technology. Organizations looking to reduce total cost of ownership must now convert their applications to the Windows Installer service if they are to fully recognize the potential of superior service delivery.

"Transitioning to Windows Installer provides a unique opportunity for many organizations to better support their computing environments," said Viresh Bhatia, CEO of InstallShield. "With Windows Installer, users experience reduced support costs, increased reliability of installed software, and decreased time to market. We are pleased to be working with Motive to bring its customers the native self-repair capabilities inherent in the Windows Installer service to improve efficiency and enhance customer support."

"We recognize that the Windows Installer service is quickly becoming the application installation and repair format of choice, and that proprietary solutions will create problems for many companies," said Mike Maples, Motive's vice president of corporate products. "Motive and InstallShield are providing customers with the technology and solutions to fully exploit emerging industry standards and the subsequent changes. Our work with InstallShield will not only help us educate the market on the powerful capabilities of the Windows Installer service, but more importantly, provide an integrated approach for quickly and easily transitioning to this new paradigm."

Motive's next generation service platform embraces and builds on InstallShield's technology and Windows Installer service in the following manner:

Motive integrates the Windows Installer service capabilities into customer service desk applications and workflow. For example, Motive can remotely detect and repair problems by invoking the Windows Installer service, querying Windows Installer service to provide application repair context, and recording Windows Installer service activity to proactively identify areas for application support improvement.
Motive protects components and settings not covered by Windows Installer service such as desktop settings, printer settings, network settings and personal application settings, such as bookmarks and preferences.
Motive registers legacy applications with Microsoft's Windows Installer service. When legacy applications are not packaged with .MSI files, Windows Installer service cannot understand, or self-heal, the broken applications.
