MOTIVE AND WISE EMBRACE APPLICATION PACKAGING AND REPAIR STANDARDS

Austin, Texas, September 24, 2001 - Motive Communications, Inc. (www.motive.com), the leading provider of intelligent service software, today announced that Wise Solutions, the leading provider of software packaging solutions, has partnered with Motive to provide Windows Installer users with repackaging and service tools. The partnership covers joint market education and endorsement of the Motive-Wise solution that complements and extends Microsoft's Windows Installer service for application packaging and repair.

Wise provides software and services for repackaging legacy installations into .MSI files, Microsoft's application packaging standard, to make them more reliable and easier to support. Microsoft's Windows Installer service, an operating system-resident service, facilitates installations and self-healing of .MSI files. Using the .MSI standard has multiple benefits including reduced support costs, increased reliability of installed software, cleaner installs and uninstalls, and reduced cost and time required to deploy new applications.

Motive's ServiceNet Platform complements Windows Installer service by providing initial application repair and protection during the Windows Installer service migration period and offering tools that allow the help desk analyst to diagnose and repair Windows Installer service applications. Motive also tracks the effectiveness of Windows Installer service self-healing, and protects components and settings not covered by Windows Installer service, such as desktop settings, printer settings, network settings and personal application settings such as bookmarks and preferences.

The significance of this partnership lies within the market's trend toward adopting and creating application packaging standards. Motive and Wise have joined to offer a solution that adds value to this growing initiative. Wise provides the ability to repackage applications into .MSI files that can be read and healed by Windows Installer service, while Motive delivers integrated Windows Installer service-compatible application support to customers.

"At Wise, we fully understand the market's need to embrace the .MSI standard," said Brien Witkowski, president of Wise Solutions. "We also understand the need for additional support around a Windows Installer environment, underscoring the importance of our partnership with Motive. Once a customer has adopted this technology, they'll need to have systems in place that can support both the new standards as well as legacy applications."

"We believe that proprietary self-healing technologies will become extinct as more and more companies turn to solutions built on industry standards," said Mike Maples, Motive's vice president of corporate products. "As a result, we recognized the need to partner with a technology leader like Wise, who shares a mutual focus on leveraging standards such as Microsoft's Windows Installer service. Together we are creating application packaging and repair solutions that provide more stable and cost-effective computing environments for our customers."
