MOTIVE COMMUNICATIONS UNVEILS NEW ACTIVEPROFILING TECHNOLOGY

Introduction of e-Service Approach to Leverage Native Windows-Based Technologies to Ensure Health of Systems and Software

Austin, TX, September 12, 2000 - Motive Communications, Inc., a leading provider of online customer-care solutions, today unveiled Motive ActiveProfiling, the first software protection and recovery technology which takes full advantage of Microsoft PC Health technologies and native Windows application support technologies.

Because of its use of native Windows APIs, ActiveProfiling technology is faster, more reliable, and easier to deploy and maintain than proprietary approaches. This integration is the result of collaboration between Motive and Microsoft Corp., originating with the design of PC Health in 1999 and continuing with the peer review of the PC Health design and implementation.

Motive ActiveProfiling Technology - Ensures Healthy Software and Systems, First to Take Advantage of Native Windows-Based Technologies

Motive ActiveProfiling technology complements the new PC Health technologies in Windows Me, providing end users with a full service help and support experience. ActiveProfiling technology allows service providers to ensure healthy PC configurations for any and all of their users' application software, user data, network, and system settings.

Motive's ActiveProfiling is unique in the industry because it is the first to directly leverage the system level features of PC Health including cohesive integration with the Support Automation Framework. Motive also supplements key PC Health protection technologies, including System Restore, which enables users to roll back their PC software configuration to a date or time when it was working properly and System File Protection, which prevents the accidental or unauthorized overwriting of critical system files. For example, Motive's ActiveProfiling can automatically protect existing installed applications and users' personal settings by uniquely utilizing the powerful capabilities of the Windows Installer Service, which is available across existing and new Windows platforms.

As a result of its support for native functionality of the operating system, ActiveProfiling is faster, more accurate, more scalable, and easier to maintain than proprietary approaches that attempt to duplicate healing and rollback functions independent of Windows and PC Health. As Microsoft enhances and broadens the scope of PC Health technology, Motive and Microsoft customers will continue to benefit from the close integration of ActiveProfiling and Microsoft technologies.

Motive Studio

Motive Studio provides the industry's leading framework and toolset for creating customizable and fully integrated e-service solutions, leveraging the PC Health feature set. Studio's automation capabilities and development-level integration with the Support Automation Framework enable the creation of highly personalized e-service experiences for end-users without requiring the service organization to learn, write, and manage the process manually. This makes it simple for service providers to create intelligent, active e-service content and to personalize the service experience.

Industry Perspective

"ActiveProfiling technology represents a shared vision between Motive, our customers and Microsoft to bring powerful e-service capabilities to every user in both corporate and consumer environments," said Dave Malcolm, vice president of development for Motive Communications. "We have worked directly with Microsoft and Motive's PC manufacturer customers over the last 18 months so that their Motive based e-service solutions fully leverage Microsoft's PC Health efforts. The results speak for themselves - our customers can now provide branded e-service directly as an integral part of their product experience, in a way that leverages Microsoft's important innovations at the platform level."

"We are very supportive of Motive's adoption of the PC Health technologies in Windows Me and the deep incorporation of these features into its products. Microsoft is firmly committed to providing the benefit and value of PC Health to all market segments by inclusion in future versions of the Windows platform," said Anthony Chavez, group program manager for PC Health at Microsoft. "We are excited that Motive's endorsement places these new Windows-based services on the path to industry-wide adoption. This will result in an improved end-user experience as well as increased overall reliability and serviceability of the Windows platform."
