PwC And Applix Team to Overhaul Financial Planning At BP Amoco

Energy Giant Revamps Financial Planning, Budgeting, Forecasting And Reporting in its ``Deep-Water'' Business Unit to Seize Internet Benefits and Maximize Flexibility

WESTBORO, Mass.--Nov. 8, 2000-- Applix, Inc. (NASDAQ:APLX - news), a global provider of e-Business solutions, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, the world's largest professional services firm, announced today that they are working with energy leader BP Amoco (BP) in its Houston-based Deep-Water business unit to develop an Internet- based business planning, forecasting & reporting system. The Deep-Water business unit manages offshore energy exploration for the corporation in the Gulf of Mexico. The new application for the BP Amoco business unit uses Applix's iTM1 On-line Analytical Processing (OLAP) technology for Internet-based planning or iPlanning.

Applix iTM1 was chosen as the technology component for the project because of its capability to easily model complex business problems, perform robust calculations on the fly, handle large volumes of data, ease of use, and open architecture. The flexibility, scalability and performance of iTM1 are vital to the long-term success of the project at BP's Deep-Water business unit.

Mr. Phillip Dewberry of BP comments, ``We are excited about the upcoming deployment of the new system tool. Our vision was to simplify the financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and reporting process as much as possible for our business unit, and at the same time, provide a consolidated roll-up to our financial headquarters in the UK. When the final application is completed, it will be designed to include top-down goal setting and reconciliation with bottom-up budgeting to streamline the entire budgeting, planning, forecasting and reporting process. The new system will also support on-the-fly 'what if' analysis for management financial reviews, eliminating the last minute, manual scrambling we had to go through with our current system to create various business scenarios. The new system will enable BP management to view financial information graphically for our business unit anytime, anywhere.''

``The project with the Deep-Water business unit of BP Amoco is just an example of how global leaders like BP are reinventing their business processes to leverage the most from the Internet and the new economy,'' said Alan Goldsworthy, Applix's president and CEO. ``In the past, companies had the luxury of creating annual financial plans and reviewing progress on a quarterly basis. Today, business planning and reporting is done on a continual, real-time basis taking into account shifts in business, market and customer dynamics, all the elements that drive financial success. Applix iTM1 technology for iPlanning is at the forefront of this changing landscape. We at Applix are proud to be part of the BP Amoco Deep-Water team and to help meet the growing demands for real-time, continuous financial planning on a global basis.''

Applix iTM1 is the premier OLAP technology for Internet-based planning (iPlanning) and the leading multi-dimensional database for highly complex business and financial analytical applications. More than 3,300 global customers, including more than half of the Fortune 500 and 72 percent of the Fortune 50, rely on the power of Applix iPlanning solutions to give them the winning edge.
